Bio: Joe & Silk Handley

Background Information:

joe and silk Fall2020 webJoe and Silk (Joseph and Vasilka) met during college at Azusa Pacific University. Everyone told Silk while she was growing up that she was destined to be a pastor’s or missionary’s wife. Joe grew up in a family with a few pastors and felt called to ministry during high school.

During college, a mission trip cemented Joe’s call to a life of ministry and Silk ventured out on a short-term mission trip teaching English in Japan. Little did they know their destinies were being shaped for a life of mission.

Not long after college graduation, they started dating and almost three years later they were married. During their wedding ceremony, they asked the minister to gather their families to lay hands on them and commission them into ministry.

You can learn more about Joe's background here...

As for Silk, she’s been a lifelong educator: either in the public-school systems in Azusa and Torrance, in private christian education in Turkey and Japan, or as a volunteer at schools, churches and various children’s and youth programs. She also served as a coordinator for counseling programs for a school district. Silk holds a BA in English literature and an MA in special education.

Words of Wisdom

When it comes to living and leading, nothing is more critical than our dependence on Christ:

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.” – John 1:4

Jesus is the most influential person in human history. When we give our lives to him, he brings steady, revolutionary change. Remember the exhortation in John 15:5 that as we “abide in Him, we will bear much fruit. Without him, we can do nothing!”

As we remain in Jesus, our lives will change and we will see him change the world!

Polycentric Leadership

PCL logo color horizJoe's own study and dissertation on Polycentric Mission Leadership have given him deep insight into a new approach to leadership, one he believes is Trinitarian in nature. His dissertation was published in 2022 and Joe is a sought-after speaker to present his findings. Joe has adopted a polycentric leadership style at A3. You can read real-life case studies and find out more about this concept at his website: https://polycentricleadership.com.

It is not always easy to have clear perspective as we have journeyed over many years of illness and chronic pain. How do we make sense of it all? Where is God in the extended seasons of unceasing trauma? How do we push on when there are no easy answers and we feel like we are hanging on by a thread? What can we share with our prayer partners to encourage them, when there is seemingly little or no encouragement to share?

They are very impressive and I hope you’ll check them out – http://visionsynergy.net/ Most recently Kärin sent me a letter highlighting the impact A3 has had on a new venture they are doing. Here’s what Kärin had to say:

Serving on the A3 board has not only provided many insights for my own board development, but what I’ve learned about leadership development has also been instrumental in shaping visionSynergy’s network leader development initiatives. We've consistently seen that one of the major barriers to unleashing spiritual transformation is a lack of Christian leaders with skills needed to facilitate collaboration...

On behalf of the entire A3 family, I want to thank you for your friendship, partnership and generous support. Over the year-end, as you’ll see in our brief video here, the Lord provided more than $565,000 to help us advance the mission of empowering leaders for mission movements in Asia. You were a key part to seeing nearly $316,000 being sent in to match the $250,000 challenge that was given to us. We praise God for you....

handsDo you lead with an open hand or tight fist?

After reading our 2018 ministry breakthroughs report, a friend asked me why A3 is growing so rapidly while other better-known ministries may not be growing. For example, he knows of a ministry and leader far better known than A3 that is not growing. One reason why we’re seeing exponential growth now—apart from God’s hand of blessing after five decades of sowing— is that I’ve learned the secret to let go...

joe headshot 2018 600pxHi friends! What an exciting year it's been with A3 this past year as we've seen a number of breakthroughs in the ministry. God has grown our ministry on a number of fronts. First off, new country development… We expanded into two brand-new countries that were really hungry for what we want to offer and what they want to see a delivered. It was so fun to come alongside and see their faces shine after their first two sessions. It's a remarkable year for us on that front. And then as we look towards the future...

Not long ago, I got to watch one of our local faculty members in action… It was so fun! Dr. A, as we’ll call him for security reasons, who is blurred in these photos is an expert on Orality, a focus of modern missions since the majority of the world is either Oral Preference Learners or Illiterate. He did a superb job of training this group of pastors on the topic of “Christ and Culture.” It was inspiring watching him. We played games, had dialog, and listened to his lectures. They were all designed to keep us moving and involved. It enhanced the overall learning experience because...

This past Saturday, Azusa Pacific University bestowed two of A3 Leaders with honorary doctorates. Both Meng Aun Hour from Cambodia and Rev. I was proud to be there with them and hear APU president Jon Wallace share of their immense accomplishments. It was a special day for A3 as my two colleagues received this honor. Now, when they lead their Bible schools and seek accreditation from their governments,...

A3’s first active missionary to pass into eternity

As you may have heard, Mike Wilson has joined Jesus in heaven, ending a very difficult journey of declining capacity over many months. While we miss Mike this side of eternity, we are glad that he is no longer suffering from his condition and has entered a home where there are no more tears, no more troubles. I want to thank you for praying for Mike, Mary Jo, and their children Stacia and Brandon these many months. We are glad that Mike is walking with Jesus in perfect health today. At the same time, we know that Mary Jo, Stacia and Brandon still feel the pain of loss this side of eternity. Do keep praying for them...

ancient antique architecture 879359 500pxIt seems like every day, I’m hearing more reports about persecution happening in the world. I recently left a country that is under significant duress. The week we were there, a crackdown occurred in one of their most famous towns – a town known for having one of their national symbols. The pastors, alumni of A3, had gathered together for a city-wide gathering of churches, only to be harassed by their local community. It seems that everyone is after them: government officials, religious authorities and even the neighbors. It’s sad to see and many lives are often at stake. This type of situation is on the rise in many of the countries we work in. We see this type of harassment happening in more than half the countries we work in and so we could use your prayers. More importantly, they need your prayers!
