Not long ago, I got to watch one of our local faculty members in action… It was so fun!
Dr. A, as we’ll call him for security reasons, who is blurred in these photos is an expert on Orality, a focus of modern missions since the majority of the world is either Oral Preference Learners or Illiterate. He did a superb job of training this group of pastors on the topic of “Christ and Culture.”
It was inspiring watching him. We played games, had dialog, and listened to his lectures. They were all designed to keep us moving and involved. It enhanced the overall learning experience because he used so many different styles and didn’t rely on just his lectures. He called the approach “Androgoral” meaning a blend of adult learning approaches with orality. Rather than pedagogy, he used andragogy to get participation and thus ownership. He combined that with the use or Oral Methods: the use of story, symbols (images), and signs.
It was a brilliant example of the ideal form of A3 teaching methodology. When we are at our best, we incorporate all of these to get leaders learning at an entirely different level.
And, I couldn’t have been more proud. Why? – Because I was asked several years ago to serve on the International Orality Network’s senior advisory team for leader development. Even though most of our A3 participants are literate, they are mostly oral preference learners. Thus, Dr. A’s approach was perfect for who we are!
I hope you’ll get a little snapshot of his approach in these photos but I hope that someday, you’ll come experience A3 with us. There’s nothing like getting involved on the ground.
