Candles in the dark

Editor's Note: Sue Takamoto's husband, Eric and two other A3 missionaries Peter Thomson and Kent Muhling have gone up to the Sendai area to bring supplies and assess the situation. This is one of the earlier updates posted by Sue on March 21.

I wanted to make a few quick posts for those of you who check and pray.  I’ve talked with Eric a few times today.  One disclaimer – I am trying to get the facts straight but they come via cell phone and often many hours before I post, so if there are occasional errors I apologize.  And I’ll try and correct them later if I find out!  Also, we are fine with anyone reposting this information to share what is going on.

Today Eric and his team headed...

Samaritan's Purse is on our short list of recommended organizations doing relief work in Japan. We've put them on our list because they deliver the right kind of aid quickly and through effective channels -- local Christian churches.

Most of you likely know that Samaritan's Purse airlifted 93 tons of relief supplies to Japan on March 19. A3 and CRASH are honored to be working alongside this North Carolina-based relief organization, helping to deliver these supplies to Christian churches who

Thanking

Thank you for the outpouring of love and concern for our family during this past week. First, be assured that we are all fine. All of our A3 family are safe from harm. We have received word that all members of our Sendai church, as well, are safe, though our dear friend Kazue lost her home in the Arahama tsunami. (Perhaps you saw some pictures of this town on the news.)

Weeping

The past seven days have been some of the most intense that we...

List of Recommended Organizations in Japan for Financial Gifts

At A3, we want to recommend a few select giving options. We realize that there are numerous fine choices for directing your financial assistance. There are certainly many excellent organizations doing great relief work.

However, sometimes it can be daunting to decide where to send your donations. So we offer this simple list to our community to help you narrow your choices, if that's helpful. The organizations on this list are particularly focused on the whole gospel in delivering their aid and we can wholeheartedly endorse their work.

These organizations are listed in alphabetical order...

Explanation of Radiation Levels

Fukushima nuclear reactor workers. Photo by stevenjohnhibbs.wordpress.comFamily and friends of ours back in North America have been worried about our potential exposure to radiation. It's good to be remembered and loved! While we appreciate everyone's concern, we don't want them to worry unnecessarily.  We want to let folks know that we are safe so far, along with all the other missionaries we personally know.  For information purposes, we are posting a couple articles regarding the radiation exposure issue.  Feel free to skim them to find out more about this situation.

1.) This is a post from Justin Lau to help dispel rumors that we are all at risk in Tokyo:

Japan's Tsunami: Chaos and Kairos

Details

Earthquake damage in JapanIn a time of chaos, it's a kairos moment.

chaos , n.

  • • complete disorder and confusion
  • • the formless matter supposedly present before the creation of the universe.

kairos , n.

  • a propitious moment for decision or action; (Greek), literally "opportunity"

I’m borrowing the name of fellow A3 missionary Dorrie Takazawa’s blog, "Chaos and Kairos” because these words accurately sum up this overwhelming situation in Japan.

Looking at the news reports, you can see the chaos everywhere.  Though the Japanese government...

My ministry is based on the model presented by Henry and Richard Blackaby and Claude King in Experiencing God (Revised and Expanded Edition 2008). Recently my case study of planting Kiyose Grace Chapel was published by Wipf and Stock in the book The Facilitator Era: Beyond Pioneer Church Multiplication. I've already blogged about the best practices of successful church multipliers from that book. Here's the case study I submitted that eventually morphed into Chapter 4. I would welcome comments or other feedback...

Savior I come
Quiet my soul
Remember
Redemption's hill

When your blood was spilled
For my ransom
Everything I once held as dear
I count it all as loss

Lead me to the Cross
Where your love poured out
Bring me to my knees

Lord, I lay myself down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You

The last 3 years have been some of the hardest of my life...

15 February 2011

This post is a compilation of wisdom from church multipliers all over the world. It appears in a book I was invited to contribute a case study from Japan for church planters. Once again, it proves the wisdom/value of being a God cooperator relying on the sometimes serendipitous grace of God. As you read these numbered points, which ones do you resonate with? Best Practices of Successful Church Multipliers...
