Kavitha Emmanuel takes on the hard questions in this new video series
A major challenge faced by Christ followers is understanding how God’s love and care can apply to the tough problems of life. This challenge to understand can be acute when we are confronted with the evils of discrimination, oppression, and injustice.
Kavitha Emmanuel is a pastor, advocate, and change agent based in Chennai, India. She and her husband Jeyakaran have been deeply involved in the A3 movement for many years, including Jeyakaran’s service as South India Director for the A3 leader development program.
Kavitha’s ministries have had significant impact in India and beyond, including her establishment and leading of the Dark is Beautiful movement, taking on the issue of discrimination because of skin color. https://www.darkisbeautiful.in/
Kavitha believes the answers to the tough challenges of life lie with us. “God wants us to be the change that we want to see. It involves breaking out of the church bubble that many of his can hide in and learning how we can apply God’s Word to God’s world.”
So when RightNow Media (https://www.rightnowmedia.org/), a streaming service that supplies world-class Christian teaching resources, invited Kavitha to develop a video teaching series on a topic she was especially passionate about, she knew what she wanted to tackle. “My goal is to help believers both understand that God does care, even as we struggle with discrimination and injustice, and that we can be part of God’s justice and healing in a broken world.”
Her four-part series applies key areas of Scripture to these tough issues. “I am the first Asian woman invited to do a series for RightNow Media,” Kavitha told me. “So it’s no surprise that I take a look at the many examples of strong women in the Scriptures, including the stories of Abigail, Esther, Lydia, and the Samaritan woman.”
For Christians to have an impact in the world, Kavitha believes we need to stay informed on the world. “The theologian Karl Barth said that Christians should read the Bible and the newspaper together,” Kavitha shared.
“Today, the phrase might be ‘Read the Bible and Internet news together’, but the point is the same. To be relevant, we Christians must keep informed to what is going on in the world—especially where oppression and injustice are marginalizing innocent people. Then we will know where God’s Kingdom impact, delivered by God’s people, can make the most difference.”
